4 DAYS KRUGER NATIONAL PARK

Trip Overview

The Kruger National park is rightly renowned for its unparalleled variety of African wildlife and immense size. This short introductory trip gives you a taste of what Kruger has to offer while exposing you to some of the breathtaking scenery of this beautiful area.

Stage highlights:
Leaving behind Johannesburg, the 'City of Gold', we spend some time in the Blyde River Canyon area. Excitement runs high as we enter the world's second largest game reserve, the Kruger National Park.
The next two days are spent exploring the southern part of the reserve and we stand a good chance of sighting elephant, lion, rhino, leopard and buffalo - Africa's famed Big Five. Early morning game viewing usually rewards us with some great sightings. We overnight in the Kruger's delightful rest camps.
Heading back towards Gauteng through the subtropical lowveld we may purchase some crafts and curios along the way. Our last evening is spent in cosmopolitan Johannesburg.

Stage duration:4 Days

Day 1: Pilgrims Rest

Leaving behind Johannesburg, the city of gold, we head through the province of Mpumalanga and some breathtaking vistas of the Lowveld. Places of scenic interest include God's Window and Bourke's Luck Potholes. We wander around the quaint gold rush village of Pilgrim's Rest, which still retains many of its original buildings. The night is spent close to the Kruger National Park and we experience an evening at a tribal village - enjoying a traditional meal and dancing. (Lunch, Dinner)

Stage highlights:
For your interest - Blyde River Canyon:

The Blyde River Canyon is one of the most spectacular canyons in Africa and its cliffs rise between 600m-800m from the riverbed. At the ‘Three Rondavels viewpoint’ (also called ‘The Three Sisters’) is an unforgettable view of three huge rock spirals rising out of the far wall of the canyon. Their tops appear to have a hut-like rounded roof. Where the Blyde River (‘river of joy’) and the Treur River (‘river of sorrow’) meet, water erosion has formed one of the most remarkable geological phenomena in the country, known as ‘Bourke’s Luck Potholes’. Over thousands of years, surreal cylindrical rock sculptures created by whirling water have formed a series of dark pools which contrast artfully with the streaked white and yellow lichen covered rocks.
Following the road and the Treur River south, there are further viewpoints; Wonder View, God’s Window and the Pinnacle.
The Three Rondavels are named after the Swazi Chief - Maripi’s wives. From the lowest to the highest, they are Magabolle, Mogoladikwe and Maserote.

(Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
