The Northern Experience


A camping safari through four countries: South Africa, Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe. Just a few of the highlights are: Victoria Falls, Chobe National Park, Namib Desert, Etosha Pan, Okavango Delta, Sossusvlei, Fish River Canyon, hot springs, Bushman paintings and African wildlife.

Day 1 - Cedarberg Mountains, South africa

Cedarberg Mountains, Citrusdal Hot Springs, South Africa. On the first day of the tour, we travel to the scenic Cedarberg Mountains - with stunning sandstone formations and lovely views - making for great hiking opportunities. [LD]

Day 2 - West Coast and Namaqualand, South Africa

West Coast to the Orange River, South Africa. We pass through some magnificent mountain ranges on our way to the Orange River. If you are travelling in spring you will see the spectacular carpets of wildflowers in the famous Namaqualand region. [BLD]

Day 3 - Orange River, Namibia

Canoeing on the Orange River, Nambia. We travel by canoe! The grand Orange River is the border between Namiba and South Africa and makes for excellent water activities and imposing surrounds. [BLD]

Day 4 - Ai-Ais Hot Springs and Fish River Canyon, Namibia

Ai-Ais Hot Springs and Hobas-Fish River Canyon, Namibia. A short drive takes us to Ai-Ais Hot Springs where, for those fit and interested, we explore the Fish River Canyon by foot, while the rest of the group enjoy the view from the top. [BLD]

Sundowners on the edge of the second largest canyon on this earth.

Day 5 - Sossusvlei, Namibia

Sossusvlei, Namibia. Moving inland we make our way to Sesriem, the gateway to the world's highest sand dunes at Sossusvlei. The view of this sea of red dunes will be imprinted on your mind forever. [BLD]

Day 6 - Sesriem and Sossusvlei, Namibia

Sesriem and Sossusvlei, Namibia. At sunrise these red sand dunes, which can reach heights of over 300m, are absolutely spectacular and provide fantastic photo opportunities. [BLD]

Day 7 - Namib Naukluft National Park, Namibia

Namib Naukluft National Park & Kuiseb Canyon to Swakopmund, Namibia. The day is spent driving through the Namib Naukluft National Park and the Kuiseb Canyon on our way to Swakopmund. [BL]

Day 8 - Swakopmund, Namibia

Swakopmund, Namibia. Today you visit Swakopmund: one of the most picturesque towns in Nambia. It is situated on the Atlantic Ocean and features many German buildings and influences. [BL]

Time for yourself and optional adventure activities.

Stage duration:1 day

Day 9 - Cape Cross Seal Colony, Namibia

Cape Cross Seal Colony, Skeleton Coast and Brandberg, Namibia. We follow the barren Skeleton Coast, eventually leaving the Atlantic coastline behind as we head inland across the desert planes for Brandberg. [BLD]

Day 10 - Twyfelfontein, Namibia

Twyfelfontein, Burnt Mountain and the Desert Elephants, Namibia. In the afternoon and early the following morning we set off with a local guide in the search of the Desert Elephants. Our chances of finding them are good, as the local Damara people always seem to know their whereabouts. [BLD]

Day 11 - Petrified Forest, Namibia

Petrified Forest, Finger Rock and Etosha National Park, Namibia. Our first stops are the Finger Rock and the Petrified Forest. Lunch is eaten in the small German town of Outjo where we have the opportunity to visit an Internet Cafe. [BLD]

Day 12 to 13 - Etosha National Park

Etosha National Park, Namibia. We fill the next two days with game drives, including evening game viewing at floodlit waterholes. At all three camps, Namutoni, Okaukuejo and Halali, you can take a swim in the swimming pool. Alternatively, watch the sunsets and the group can watch animals drink at the floodlit waterhole until late into the night. [BLD]

Day 14 - Etosha to Kavango River, Namibia

Etosha to Kavango River, Namibia. From the sparse landscape of Etosha, we leave for the more lush eastern part of the country. A sunset cruise is optional before we sit down and have a braai for dinner. [BLD]

Day 15 to 17 - Okavango Delta, Botswana

Kavango River to Makwena Lodge River Camp - Okavango Delta, Botswana. The delta is a well-preserved gem of Africa with a vast oasis of crystal clear lakelets, lagoons and palm-fringed islands. On our last evening at Makwena Lodge we feast with a braai (barbeque). [BLD]

Optional Mokoro trip and the tranquility of the Delta.

Day 18 - Maun, Botswana

Maun, Botswana. Leaving Makwena, we drive down the Western border of the Okavango Delta through Botswana's rural heartland. We spend the night in Maun, a frontier town that has rapidly expanded into a booming area. [BLD]

The drive around the western part of the Delta.

Stage duration:1 day

Day 19 - Chobe National Park, Botswana

Chobe National Park, Botswana. The next morning from Maun we drive via Nata up the eastern border of the Okavango Delta. We spend the night camping on the banks of the Chobe River listening to the calls of Africa. [BLD]

Nature at it's best.

Day 20 - Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

Chobe National Park to Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. The morning is spent game viewing along the banks of the Chobe River. The unspoilt wilderness of Chobe National Park boasts a huge variety of game and is a fitting grand finale to our safari. After lunch we head through the Zambezi National Park to our final destination, Victoria Falls. [BL]

The last wildlife on our trip and the majestic Victoria Falls.

All transport in standard or custom built vehicles, services of a registered field guide/driver, tents and camping equipment, three meals a day, camping fees, park and entrance fees except where specified, excursions stated in itineraries.

What to bring along:-
A full list of items will be issued on receipt and confirmation of your reservation. We suggest you travel light. Please pack warm clothes for the winter months of June to September. Further items should include a torch, water bottle, spare film and camera batteries, binoculars, suntan lotion, comfortable walking shoes and any prescription medication.
